ABOUT
The BETA Technological Centre of the University of Vic-Central University of Catalonia, founded in 2014, promotes research in environment and sustainability. Its mission is to place research and innovation at the service of rural territories, fostering sustainability, competitiveness, and balance with urban areas. It works mainly with the agri-food, industry, public administration, academia, and social entities. With a multidisciplinary team, CT BETA addresses rural challenges through the circular bioeconomy, shaping sustainable policies and supporting decision-making at industrial and governmental levels.
ROLE IN THE PROJECT
CT BETA will lead the efforts for ensuring RUNFASTER biorefineries are safe and sustainable by assessing the innovation since early stages. For that, BETA will perform a complete Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment to evaluate both the novel bio-based value chains as well as products in a holistic and comparable way. This sustainability assessment will include the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to quantify the environmental impacts, the Techno-Economic Analysis to evaluate the replicability of the business models and socio-economic impacts including the socio-environmental benefits and trade-offs, as well as the Social-LCA and Social Acceptance Analysis to ensure the social fairness and protection of communities. Moreover, BETA will explore the adoption of Safe and Sustainable by Design Framework in this novel biorefineries and value chains.
