ABOUT
Carhue Piggeries Ltd is a family run business located in the South West of Ireland. The company operates a high welfare, modern, integrated pig farm; striving to produce pork with the lowest carbon footprint in Ireland. The business is located in the heart of the agricultural hotspot of West Cork. We work closely with local businesses to maximise all opportunities to reduce our carbon impact. The majority of our feed ingredients are sourced locally; all our feed is manufactured just 3 kilometres from the farm. While all our produce is processed in a local food business located just 2 kilometres away. The business is also involved in an Anaerobic Digestion facility which produces renewable energy through the production of biogas.
ROLE IN THE PROJECT
Carhue Piggeries Ltd will evaluate the nutritional potential and farm-level application of defatted meals and fiber-rich by-products from oilseed crops. We will be incorporating the Defatted Meal and Soluble fibres into a feed formulation which will be trialled on a group of pigs on the farm. The aim is to formulate and validate safe, digestible animal feed products, particularly for pigs. Trial feed to be tested on pigs at Carhue Piggeries under real farm conditions. Observations will include daily feed-intake, daily live weight gain, feed conversion ratios and any health or physiological effects.
