Institute of field and vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) is a research, developmental, and advisory institution oriented towards technology and knowledge transfer from basic, field, and laboratory research to large-scale applications in fields. Research at IFVCNS is primarily focused on crop breeding, genetic resources and crop management. With extensive experience in over 140 national and international projects (Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, FAO, ECPGR, IPA, COST and bilateral projects), IFVCNS strategically aligns with EU and other funding sources. The RUNFASTER4EU research team from IFVCNS brings expertise in genetics and breeding, crop management strategies, and oil crops biochemistry.

ROLE IN THE PROJECT

IFVCNS will diversify cropping systems, making new genotypes (Brassica napus) suitable for marginal lands with low inputs. IFVCNS will promote crop diversification through breeding innovations of rapeseed and intercropping systems with safflower, aiming to improve biodiversity, soil health, and sustainability under low-input conditions, including limited water and fertilizer use. The goal will be to maintain yield stability under stress conditions such as poor soil fertility, unpredictable rainfall, and temperature fluctuations. Moreover, the breeding program aims to select B. napus genotypes with enhanced drought tolerance and natural resistance to common pests and diseases by choosing traits that improve water-use efficiency and utilize nutrients more efficiently, requiring limited or no use of chemical pesticides. IFVCNS will help identify and connect with key stakeholders, bring together different interest groups, and work on the acceptance of circular bio-based solutions and products. It will also share project results widely, ensuring that project outcomes are effectively communicated.
